Mackerel season ends.

Today marks the end of our mackerel season with a landing by the MV Enterprise, caught west of Ireland. The mackerel moved very quickly in January from the Butt of Lewis to SW of Castletownbere (Ireland). The average size remained around 400gms for the winter season, meaning we got a good production spread over all sizes. The distance from the fishing grounds meant many cargoes were around 1000mt. Our large freezing capacity is essential in these circumstances so the boats get a quick turnaround and get back to sea before the fish migrate further away.

Our main suppliers have continued to be from the Scottish fleet; Christina S, Enterprise and the S&S Group in particular. Many of them have chosen to catch the majority of 2009’s quota at the beginning of the year when the fish has been plentiful.

Sales to Eastern Europe have continued at the same pace as January’s and we see no signs of a slowdown yet. Stocks from external storage facilities in Klaipeda & Szczecin have been selling well, particularly 200-400gms & 300-500gms w/r mackerel.

Our focus over the coming 2-3 months will be to sell as much mackerel as possible before our blue whiting season starts so please contact us at sales@shetlandcatch.com if you have a requirement for mackerel just now. Please also let us know if you’d also like to buy blue whiting over the coming months.

Members of our sales team will be visiting customers in several of our key markets over the coming weeks, now that our intensive mackerel season has finished. We hope to negotiate good contracts for our remaining stocks and take orders for blue whiting. We look forward to meeting many of you soon!!
