Our herring season has now drawn a final landing of herring from the Shetland registered Research. All the Shetland boats have now finished their quotas and we have been very pleased that nearly all have landed their catches here at Shetland Catch. Our total amount of raw material has exceeded our projected expectations.
The average size over the herring season has ranged from 230g at the start of the season and has been about 300g towards the end of the season. The remaining few weeks of the season, the herring has been full of roe, caught mainly in the fishing grounds south of Fair Isle .
Shipping has been extremely busy over the past few weeks. We have had a couple of reefer boats in loading fish for customers in Africa and have also had other boats in loading fish to take to our cold stores throughout Europe, in easy reach for our other customers.
Our factory staff is now busy cleaning the factory and equipment in preparation for the mackerel season, which we hope will be getting under way in the next couple of weeks, starting with boats who are catching pursed mackerel.
There may also be an opportunity throughout the season to attract boats with Atlanto-Scandia herring. So it looks like we could be in for a busy time here at the factory for the next couple of months.
We are sorry to be saying goodbye to Catherine Hawick, our Finance Director, who is leaving Shetland Catch this month to have a baby. Catherine will still continue her role as company secretary for the Board of Directors. We are delighted to welcome Paul Davies, from Cumbria , as our new Finance Manager.
Our Managing Director, Simon Leiper and Sales Manager John Angus will be attending the World Food Show in Moscow from 18 th September to 21 st September. They will be on stand E425. A report will follow after the show.
