Fun in the Factory

Well after a busy and successful blue whiting season, the factory staff is taking a well deserved break before the start of the herring season in August.

However there is no rest for the sales team at this time of year. John Angus & Alan Leask will be busy travelling to meet with some of our herring customers and hope to negotiate sales for the summer herring. Please contact us at sales@shetlandcatch.com if you have any interest in North Sea herring this year.

We have been really pleased with the results of the blue whiting and hope that next year we will be able to produce more of it. There is always room for improvement and we have learnt important lessons this year.

Staff members of Shetland Catch have been enjoying other activities over the past couple of weeks.

On the 24th May, two teams from Shetland Catch entered the RNMDSF 12th Fish Trades Golf Cup. Again Shetland Catch was delighted to be the sponsors of this event. It was a gorgeous day in Whalsay for the golf cup. 81 people participated in the event and everyone seemed to have a good time. Over £4,000 was raised for the RNMDSF. The winners were: Tranquillity, with Charisma 1 in 2nd place and believe it or not Shetland Catch 1 in 3rd place!!

Supt Peter Dade of RNMDSF Shetland was organising the event for the last time. He will be leaving Shetland in July to take up his new position in Scrabster. We would like to take this opportunity to wish him all the best in his new position.

On the same day, the Shetland Catch girls were determined to have their fun too. They had lunch in the new Museum and Archives down at Hay’s Dock then attended the opening of the exhibition “Along the Edges”. There are four artists featured in this exhibition, including Sam MacDonald who Shetland Catch was proud to sponsor. Sam MacDonald’s image features on this year’s Shetland Catch calendar. It was a pleasure to finally meet Sam, who we’ve worked with a couple of times now. I would highly recommend the exhibition to anyone, which runs until 29th June.

The following weekend, 10 members of staff and some friends and family, took part in the Cancer Research UK Relay for Life. The Relay for Life involved walking around Clickimin running track from 8pm on Saturday 31st May until 8am the following morning. There were 1,500 people taking part in the event, making it the largest one of its kind for the whole UK. At the end of the evening, £72,000 had been raised with money still to be collected. Most team members managed to stay the whole night, which was really good to see. We were extremely lucky with the weather. It stayed dry the whole night and wasn’t too cold. I think most team members were really glad that they had taken part in the event despite being in agony the following morning from all the walking!!!
